The first floor

After a quiet period for the build, Friday saw the first floor completed. The metal decking had previously been installed, and can be seen here around the telescope column.

Before the floor slab was poured, concrete was pumped into the hollow inner steel column. When set this will provide vibration-free support for the telescope, as it remains isolated from the outer column and the foundations of the rest of the building.

A further 17 cubic metres of concrete were then poured onto steel reinforcing mesh which had been placed onto the first floor decking.

A couple of hours later and the level surface can already be seen as the concrete begins to set. By Monday it will have cured sufficiently for it to be walked on and for the next phase of construction to begin.
